Questions & Answers.
Hi, welcome to Rob Locks Martial Arts Academy. The following pages are a brief summary to hopefully answer some of the most frequently asked questions about Martial Arts, The Academy, Fees and Memberships etc.
Can I start training at the academy as a complete beginner, which Martial Art will I study and will I be safe practising Martial Arts?
| You can start your training at the Academy in a Beginner/Intermediate class as soon as you wish. There are several Martial Arts available at the Academy. We would recommend that you watch a few of the different Martial Arts classes on offer to make a more informed choice. Your safety in the Academy is our No 1 priority. We have a strict policy whereby students are trained in a bully free
and safe environment. ( See constitution on the academy page) |
What do I wear and do I need to bring anything?
Loose fitting clothing is a must, tracksuit bottoms or shorts and a T Shirt. Bring also a change of shirt for your journey home. A towel and a soft drink is advisable also.
I work in a very physical job and sweat a great deal, can I come to classes straight from work?
Yes, provided you shower at work or find somewhere to wash before you arrive. Personal hygiene is very important and body odour will not be tolerated.
I hear people mentioning the word etiquette, how is this incorporated into the training at the Academy?
Without etiquette and respect for each other as we practice Martial Arts we would simply be street thugs hitting kick bags and each other. Martial Arts practised in the Academy starts and finishes with respect for each other and your Instructor.
Is what I am going to learn effective as Self Defence?
The effectiveness of what you are taught at the Academy is down to the individual. All of the classes have a large emphasis on Self defence for the street.
Are Martial Arts suitable for Women?
Absolutely! The arts are learnt and absorbed to suit the needs of the individual, being powerful and big is not a sole requirement for defending oneself on the street, using speed and striking to vital areas can be extremely effective as a means of Self defence.
Can I use what I learn in Martial Arts on the street?
ONLY in a self defence scenario or to defend your loved ones. NEVER to bully, to show off or use for any wrong purpose. Remember, in most instances you have an option to walk away.
How often do I need to train?
Twice a week is recommended, anything extra will only accelerate your learning process. Your standard will obviously be related to the time you invest, in effect, you are in control of your future in the Martial Arts at the Academy.
I have some previous training in Martial Arts, which class should I attend?
Train initially in a Beginner/Intermediate class where your level can be assessed. When appropriate you will be asked to join the Advanced group. You can train in a number of Martial Arts, you are not limited to one style.
Is there a joining fee and what is involved?
After your first free lesson, a joining fee is requested on your next visit. Please see timetable & prices page for more details.
Do I need to take out Insurance cover?
No, you are Insured when you pay your joining fee.
How does the payment scheme work?
Your first lesson is FREE. After that, your lesson fees are paid by a monthly standing order or pay in advance for six months. More details on timetable & prices page.
Can I compete or try out for any awards?
We do run competitions annually with medals and trophies for everyone taking part. See receptionist or notice boards for more details. There is also a FREE merit badge award scheme for all junior students. A junior and senior 'Student of the year' and best newcomer trophies are presented in December each year.
